It is always a terrible tragedy when a worker dies at work due to hazards, workplace negligence and other safety concerns while on the job. Recently, one of the largest laundry and dry cleaning companies in the greater New York City area, Prestige Industries, was issued five serious, three repeated and one willful safety violation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) after the agency issued an inspection of the company’s Paterson, New Jersey facility earlier this year after receiving a complaint.
The Paterson location presented workplace hazards similar to those of the Bay Shore facility, where a 24-year-old worker was killed in 2011 by being crushed by a piece of heavy machinery, according to NJ.com. This incident occurred as the result of the company failing to have lockout/tagout procedures, which are meant to prevent accidental movement of heavy machinery.
“It is unacceptable when a company continues to neglect basic safety and health procedures, especially after experiencing a fatality. Prestige Industries’ deliberate failure to uphold its responsibility to provide a safe and healthful workplace is an indication that worker safety and health is not a priority, which is intolerable,” said Robert Kulick, OSHA’s regional administrator in New York.
